Disabled and Proud<\/a> and the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/cfilc.org\">California Foundation for Independent Living Centers<\/a>\u00a0on May 25, 2016, Sacramento, CA. Alice Wong, Gregg Beratan, and Andrew Pulrang will be giving a presentation about\u00a0#CripTheVote and a portion of our talk will focus on usage of social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Other folks who are curious about Twitter and disability advocacy may be interested as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Introduction<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">#CripTheVote is an online campaign that uses Twitter to have conversations about voting and disability issues. We also have <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/disabilitythinking.com\/election-2016-cripthevote\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">blog posts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/CripTheVote\/?fref=ts\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Facebook group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> where we publish information about our upcoming events and news. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Social_media\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"> is term that\u2019s used a lot&#8211;you might hear about Facebook, YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram as examples. Broadly speaking, social media are websites or apps that allow users to post information (text, photos, audio) and share it to the public or within a specific network of friends\/colleagues. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">This article will give a describe the pros and cons of using a social media platform such as Twitter and how to get started for first-time users.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Proud to live in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/WhipHoyer\">@WhipHoyer<\/a>  district <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/a11y?src=hash\">#a11y<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CripTheVote?src=hash\">#CripTheVote<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/KQbfnWfos3\">pic.twitter.com\/KQbfnWfos3<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Derek Shields (@derekshieldsPMP) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/derekshieldsPMP\/status\/725031088159088640\">April 26, 2016<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<h2><b>Pros and Cons<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Here are a few pros of using social media if you are a person with a disability and interested in disability issues:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Most accounts are free*<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You can connect and find others with similar interests from all over the world<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You can learn about things that are happening in real-time <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You can learn about things that challenge you and make you think differently about disability issues \u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You can share your thoughts widely to the public and they can influence and impact other people<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">It can help build relationships, both in-person and online<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">People can report\/document what\u2019s happening around them<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I just cast my first independent ballot using a fully accessible voting machine. I am totally blind. And that\u2019s ok! Here are a few cons and limitations to social media:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Although technically free*, some social media sites have ownership of the content you post, collect data on your usage, and feature advertising that you cannot opt out of<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Not everyone has access to the Internet, a smartphone, or a computer <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Not everyone is comfortable learning how to use social media<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Not everyone likes talking with people you can\u2019t see face-to-face<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">It can be a huge \u201ctime suck,\u201d taking you away from other things important to your life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Like \u201creal life,\u201d there is the potential for bullying and harassment on social media which can be a serious problem<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Accessibility issues continue to create barriers to some users with disabilities<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">For more pros and cons: <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/socialnetworking.procon.org\/#pro_con\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">http:\/\/socialnetworking.procon.org\/#pro_con<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><b>Why does #CripTheVote use Social Media?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">With all the cons and drawbacks to using social media, we decided that #CripTheVote will be an online campaign that takes place primarily on Twitter for several reasons:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">It takes a lot of resources and energy to organize in-person events <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">We can have conversations with a wide swath of people with disabilities by using the #CripTheVote hashtag and having organized Twitter chats on specific issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">It\u2019s relatively easy to use social media and doesn\u2019t require any special training or preparation (just practice!)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight:400;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">For three people who don\u2019t do this for a living or with any professional connections to the political world, Twitter is one way to insert ourselves into the broader policy\/election discussion without any interference<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div class=\"embed-twitter\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#39;m here to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/CripTheVote?src=hash\">#CripTheVote<\/a> by running as a district-level delegate for the convention this summer. There\u2019s something for everyone and there\u2019s no wrong way to be an advocate.<\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>What is a \u201cTwitter Chat?\u201d And while we\u2019re at it, what\u2019s a \u201chashtag?\u201d<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">A Twitter Chat is a public discussion that uses a hashtag as a virtual meeting point on twitter. A hashtag is a way of making tweets more easily searchable. By using the hashtag (in this case #CripTheVote) one can find all of the tweets on a particular subject in one place by either clicking on the hashtag or using twitter\u2019s search function. Here are some things you can do with Twitter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Follow different organizations and people and read their tweets<\/li>\n<li>Send tweets to specific individuals when you use their Twitter handle (that is, their username\/account)<\/li>\n<li>Re-tweet (share) any tweets that you like<\/li>\n<li>Look at various conversations happening in popular culture or current events such as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?f=tweets&amp;vertical=news&amp;q=%23BlackLivesMatter&amp;src=typd\">#BlackLivesMatter<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23AbleismExists&amp;src=typd\">#AbleismExists<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Tweet links of articles or websites that you like<\/li>\n<li>Tweet messages or images you want to share<\/li>\n<li>And much more<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>Checking out #CripTheVote without Twitter<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">You don&#8217;t need a Twitter account if you want to follow the conversation happening in real-time.
