For our seventh chat, we are delighted to have guest host <\/span><strong>Talila &#8220;TL&#8221;<\/strong><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><strong> Lewis<\/strong> to join us in a conversation about mass incarceration, the legal system, and how they impact people with disabilities. You can find the questions for this chat at the end of this post.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">From the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aclu.org\/issues\/mass-incarceration\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">American Civil Liberties Union<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">America, land of the free, has earned the disturbing distinction of being the world\u2019s leading jailer. Representing just 5 percent of the world\u2019s population, we now hold 25 percent of the world\u2019s inmates. The \u201ctough on crime\u201d politics of the 1980s and 1990s fueled an explosion in incarceration rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">According to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/reports\/pie2016.html\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Prison Policy Initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The American criminal justice system holds more than 2.3 million people in 1,719 state prisons, 102 federal prisons, 942 juvenile correctional facilities, 3,283 local jails, and 79 Indian Country jails as well as in military prisons, immigration detention facilities, civil commitment centers, and prisons in the U.S. territories.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><strong>Did you know?<\/strong> <\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Among incarcerated youth, 85 percent have learning and\/or emotional disabilities, yet only 37 percent receive special education in school. Most were either undiagnosed or not properly served in school:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncd.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Documents\/NCD_School-to-PrisonReport_508-PDF.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">https:\/\/www.ncd.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/Documents\/NCD_School-to-PrisonReport_508-PDF.pdf<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">5.8 million people cannot vote because they have a felony on their record?<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sentencingproject.org\/issues\/felony-disenfranchisement\/\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">http:\/\/www.sentencingproject.org\/issues\/felony-disenfranchisement\/<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Info on the The Sentencing Reform &amp;
