I&#8217;m r<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">oiling in a cauldron of anger, sorrow, fear &amp; fatigue. There is such endemic ableist violence disabled people witness and experience every day, that it seriously makes you question stuff. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">If you are non-disabled and unfamiliar with #ableism, what happened in #Sagamihara is a clear-cut example of as you\u2019ll ever get. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">FYI, it\u2019s not my job to teach you what <a href=\"https:\/\/mic.com\/articles\/121653\/6-forms-of-ableism-we-need-to-retire-immediately#.cER0zRPUx\">ableism<\/a> is. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">A man planned<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2016\/07\/27\/world\/asia\/japan-knife-attack-disabled.html?smid=tw-nytimesworld&amp;smtyp=cur\"> methodically to kill disabled people.<\/a> He notified others. He imagined a world where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2016\/jul\/26\/japan-care-home-attack-satoshi-uematsu-horrifying-vision-disabled-people\">disabled people should be euthanized by \u2018guardians<\/a>\u2019. \u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ushmm.org\/wlc\/en\/article.php?ModuleId=10005200\">This worldview is held by many people<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theestablishment.co\/2016\/05\/20\/nobodys-death-is-a-blessing\/\">more than you know<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">I turned on cable TV on 7\/26 hoping for live coverage in #Sagamihara as I previously saw for Orlando, Dallas, Nice, and Istanbul. Nope. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">It was all about the DNC. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Will there be the profiles of each disabled person murdered in the news the way they would for acts of terror? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">What is more terrorizing than genocidal violence? \u00a0So I\u2019m gonna just put it out there&#8230;my message to non-disabled folks\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t ascribe mental illness to the killer&#8217;s actions. Hate is hate. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t think this is an isolated incident &amp; something that couldn\u2019t happen here (wherever here is). <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t presume that it\u2019s a cultural issue or that Japanese attitudes toward disability is to blame. <\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan and think these murdered disabled people are \u2018in a better place.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Listen to disabled people &amp; take them seriously.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Learn about #ableism &amp; think about your implicit bias.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Share your resources, platform, space to disabled people however you can.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Recognize disabled people as part of a larger continuum of human diversity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Employ disabled people &amp; support their full participation in society.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Ask what Japanese disabled people want and need. Their story, their lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Even if you\u2019re a spiritual person, prayers won\u2019t prevent ableism, violence, erasure, or marginalization.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left:30px;\"><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Don\u2019t #PrayForJapan. Demand accountability from the authorities when mass violence happens. Apologies &amp; investigations aren\u2019t enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">So weird having to convince folks that disabled people have value. A lot of labor spent in having to defend your right to exist. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">In addition to what happened in #Sagamihara,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/global-development-professionals-network\/2016\/jul\/18\/three-deaf-women-murdered-haiti-change-disabled-people\">3 Deaf women in Haiti<\/a> have been murdered.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Disabled people <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2016\/jul\/02\/disabled-cancer-patient-tsa-lawsuit-memphis-airport\">have been beaten <\/a>\u00a0o<\/span><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">r killed by law enforcement, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dnainfo.com\/chicago\/20160713\/uptown\/police-are-murdering-disabled-black-people-residents-tell-doj\">disabled people of color<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The most recent incident was the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/autistic-man-is-not-the-same-anymore-after-shooting-family-says\/\">shooting of #CharlesKinsey<\/a> and traumatization of autistic man #ArnladoRios.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">This doesn\u2019t include violence that happens to disabled people in the <a href=\"https:\/\/storify.com\/SFdirewolf\/cripthevote-violence-disability\">home, schools, institutions, prison<\/a>, etc.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">The world can feel so hostile and cruel to disabled people&#8211;that\u2019s no exaggeration. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">I\u2019m not asking for sympathy or pity. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Not waiting for awareness or acceptance. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Not begging for inclusion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Not feeling gratitude to non-disabled people for letting us live. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Disabled people are more than helpless objects of ableism &amp; violence. We deserve the world, the universe, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight:400;\">Disabled people are our own lifelines. This, I truly believe.
